Summer is the perfect season to spend time outdoors and enjoy the beautiful weather. Many people invest in quality patio furniture to enhance relaxation and entertainment in their outdoor space.
Most likely you’ve been putting your outdoor furniture to good use so far this summer on your Bucks County patio, but the occasional thunderstorm has rolled in during this season. It’s important to take steps to secure your furniture from blowing away during summer storms!
SOS – Secure Outside Stuff
Patio furniture tends to be lighter and more fragile. During a storm, heavy winds can blow away chairs, umbrellas, and tables. The pieces themselves may be damaged, but the furniture may actually do damage to your house, fence, or other fixtures from being blown into them.
To keep your Bucks County patio set safe, try these tips from Paul Construction:
- Take down your picnic table umbrella when you know a storm is headed your way. It is best to put it inside a shed or garage if possible, but if not, lay it on the ground outside. If your umbrella cannot be removed, be sure to close it, secure it with a tie, and cover it. This will protect the umbrella from being damaged or becoming a flying object.
- Place a heavy-duty cover over your furniture and weigh each piece down by using a sandbag or other heavy object. This will help keep your outdoor pieces dry and will secure them in place. If your chairs have seat cushions, it is best to remove them and store them indoors. For an added layer of protection, use a bungee cord to tie your furniture to an immovable object, such as a railing.
- If possible, stack your chairs in a corner when you know a storm is approaching. Some chair sets now interlock for nesting purposes. This comes in handy if you find yourself needing to stack often!
- If you are really worried about furniture blowing away, you may consider purchasing wrought-iron frames. While these are a bit more difficult to move, it is exactly the quality you’d want if high winds are frequenting the area. Wrought iron is more durable and can withstand the storms of summer.
