How to Remove Rust Stains from Concrete Patio

Have you gotten a lot of use out of your patio? Eventually, you will begin to notice some wear and tear. If you’ve found signs of rust on your concrete patio, even after giving it a good power wash, you’re probably wondering how to remove rust stains from concrete patio surfaces. Luckily, the experts at Paul Construction and Awning are here to help!

Tips For How to Remove Rust Stains from Concrete Patio Surfaces

No one likes the look of ugly stains! When trying to figure out how to remove rust stains from concrete patio spaces, some homeowners think they have to use a commercial rust remover from a home improvement store. But actually, there are plenty of ways to get the job done naturally! If you’ve just come across the rust stains, get to work removing them as soon as you can.

  1. Prepare the surface. If the actual rust is still present, make sure you clear that away. You can’t remove the stain without first removing the actual rust. Then, sweep away all the debris from the area before getting started with the cleaning solution.
  2. Use a natural solution. While you could use a commercial cleaner, a natural solution is much more effective and also cheaper! Because acid reacts with rust to cause it to dissolve, you will need some household products that have high levels of acidity. Undiluted vinegar or lemon juice works great. Pour the liquid straight onto the stain and allow it to do its work for about 10 minutes. After those 10 minutes, take a brush with hard bristles and scrub the stain. Rinse with cold water. Are the stains in hard to reach areas or on furniture? Put the vinegar or lemon juice in a spray bottle and spray the area. But be careful if you have plants nearby – high acid products will damage them!
  3. Prevent stains going forward. The best method is to just prevent rust so you don’t have to worry about removing stains! Metal patio furniture tends to be the most common culprit. Prevent rust from forming by applying a fresh coat of paint to the furniture at least once a year.
  4. What not to use. Whatever you do, do not use chlorine bleach on rust stains. This will only make things worse!
